OK, my bike kept blowing the Main Fuse and found out that my R/R is charging up to 16.8 volts and was frying the baby.

So I took the keys out of the bike and ordered a new R/R.

Was getting bored so I decided to take the old one off and I found something that I consider out of the ordinary.

Well the module itself wasn't making contact with the cover which to my understanding acts as a heat sink.

Here's a pic of the thing and I know the pictures blurry.

But you should be able to see that the R/R has been seperated from the case by over an inch with the over sized screws.

So here's my question.

Should I install the new R/R in the same manner or have it secured firmly to the case?

That also doesn't look like a stock regulator, as the OEM ones don't have a plug at the regulator. Maybe the one in the picture was installed like that because it wouldn't fit flat against the plate? In anycase whoever installed it like that helped kill it, since without contact with the heat sink plate, it probably overheated.

The regulator should be flat against the plate in order to transfer as much heat as possible. There should also be a ground wire from one of the mounting screws (the one nearest the wires) connecting directly to the battery negative wire.

Check your stator, because a badly grounded overheating R/R could have damaged your stator.

There's a ground wire I just didn't show it in the picture.

Just went outside to check the stator and it's resistance reading was 158 ohms.

158 ohms? What are you testing?
Test from coil leads to ground should give you infinte resistance. If there's any current getting from the coils to ground, you've got trouble.
Testing resistance between coil leads should give very low resistance, around 0.4ohms. If you're getting 158ohms between the coil leads, you've probably got burnt coils.
I hope you were testing something else and your stator is ok!

Sorry it was the pick up coil not the stator... [grin]

Anyway my question concerning the R/R has been asnwered and I'll mark this solved and check out the stator when I get the chance.
